Corpus Christi, Texas ? Kansas University’s women’s golf team was in a tie for third place Monday after shooting a 657 during the first two rounds of the Islander Invitational.
KU opened the two-day tournament with a first-round total of 338, followed by a tournament-best second-round score of 319 on the 5,900-yard, par-72 King’s Crossing Golf and Country Club.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi leads the 15-team field with 644 strokes, followed by Texas-El Paso (656) and McLennon CC and the Jayhawks.
“We started off a little bit rocky, but we came on strong to position ourselves in third place,” KU coach Nicole Hollingsworth said. “I am excited about setting the tournament-best score of 319.”
KU junior Jill MacDonald leads the Jayhawks after shooting a two-round score of 161, good for a share of sixth. Sophomore Jennifer Bawanan finished the day in a tie for 12th place at 163, while junior Heather Rose carded a 166 for a tie for 22nd place.
Kristy Straub capped off the day shooting a 170 to tie for 38th place, while junior Tiffany Kruggel fired a 174 for the two rounds and tied for 47th place. Sophomore Tegan Thornberry is in a tie for 62nd place with a two-round total of 180.
“Our team is very excited about tomorrow because we are in a position to win the tournament,” Hollingsworth said.
Kansas will begin today’s final round with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m.
