KU seeking director for Williams Fund

By J-W Staff Report     Feb 16, 2002

Kansas University’s athletic department has been without a Williams Fund director since Scott McMichael resigned last summer, but the position should be filled sometime this spring.

“We’ve had 200 applicants for the job,” KU associate athletic director Richard Konzem said during the regular February meeting of the KU Athletics Corp. board on Friday afternoon. “That’s more than I expected.”

Konzem added that a search committee had been formed and they hope to identity the leading candidates before the Big 12 Conference basketball tournament begins in early March.

The Williams Fund oversees donations to the university’s athletic program.

Konzem filled in Friday for athletic director Al Bohl, who was in Scottsdale, Ariz., for an alumni golf tournament. Bohl wasn’t the only absentee. Nearly half the board members missed a meeting that lasted only about half an hour. No business was conducted.

Afterward, Konzem said Kansas was close to finalizing its 2002 football schedule. The Sept. 28 open date, he said, has been filled with an announcement of the foe scheduled for next week.

KU is also negotiating to move its Sept. 7 trip to Nevada-Las Vegas to the end of the season (Nov. 23). The Jayhawks are scheduled to open at Iowa State on Aug. 31 and first-year coach Mark Mangino has said he would prefer not to begin the season with back-to-back road games.
