Phoenix ? A day after opening its season with two losses, Kansas University’s softball team bounced back with a pair of victories Saturday at the Fiesta Bowl Classic.
Kansas run-ruled Utah State, 8-0, in five innings before knocking off No. 17 Southwest Texas State, 6-5.
KU got on the board early against Southwest Texas State when Leah Tabb smacked a two-run double in the first inning, and the Jayhawks made it 3-0 in the third when Serena Settlemier walked and scored on an error.
Christi Musser was 2-for-2 with a triple, two runs and three RBI. Melanie Wallach also had two hits for Kansas.
Settlemier (1-1) allowed two hits, walked one and fanned eight in five innings.
Against Southwest Texas State, Musser homered in the first, and Tabb homered in the second.
The Bobcats rallied against KU starter Kirsten Milhoan and took a 5-4 lead in the fifth on Rachael Bonetti’s three-run homer off reliever Kara Pierce.
Pierce (1-1) allowed one hit and fanned four during the final two innings and earned the victory when KU rallied in the seventh.
Urquhart slapped a two-out, two-strike single to score Settlemier with the tying run, and Lindsey Weinstein singled with the bases loaded to win it.
Urquhart and Weinstein both had three hits to lead KU.
KU (2-2) is scheduled to play host Arizona State at 10 a.m. today.
