Darren Cook, director of facilities for the Kansas University athletics department, is leaving at the end of this month for a similar post at Kansas Speedway.
Cook, 41, will be in charge of grounds, maintenance and security at the 2-year-old race track in Kansas City, Kan.
“It will be very similar to what I’m doing now,” Cook said. “It’s just that the games are different. There’ll be fewer of them, but they’re longer lasting.”
Cook, a native of Lawrence who has been with the KU athletics department for almost 20 years, will continue to live in Lawrence and commute to the KC facility.
“KU has been a great place to work,” Cook said. “I’m leaving with mixed emotions. The offer was just too good to pass up.”
Cook’s first day at his new job will be Feb. 25. However, Kansas Speedway will be sending him to next week’s Daytona 500 to learn the ropes.
Brad Nachtigal, currently KU’s director of events, will succeed Cook.
