Kansas University men’s basketball walk-on Stephen Vinson showed good running form on Thursday night.
Vinson, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound freshman from Lawrence High, placed first in KU’s 12-minute hoops conditioning run at Memorial Stadium’s track.
Vinson completed 73â4 laps of the track in 12 minutes, besting junior Bryant Nash, who completed 71â2 laps and senior Kirk Hinrich, who was a tad under 71â2 laps. Freshman Moulaye Niang completed 73â8 laps. All of the Jayhawks completed the run on a muggy evening.
Sophomore Aaron Miles, who will be attending a wedding this weekend back home in Portland, Ore., didn’t participate. Senior Nick Collison, of course, also was not on hand. He’s in California with the U.S. World Championship basketball team.
Kansans always seem to fare well in KU’s conditioning run. C.B. McGrath (Topeka) placed first in 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997. John Crider (Horton) notched first in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and Brett Ballard (Hutchinson) was first last year with just over eight laps completed in 12 minutes.
KU’s first basketball practice will be Late Night With Roy Williams the night of Friday, Oct. 11.
Recruiting update: Thomas Gardner, a 6-5 senior guard from Portland’s Jefferson High the same school that sent Miles and Michael Lee to KU tells Shay Wildeboor of rivals.com he will make an official campus visit to KU on Sept. 27-28. Gardner, who is down to three finalists, has visited UConn and will trek to Missouri on Sept. 6.
Tennis standout joins staff: Former No. 1 KU tennis player Kris McGrath has been hired as marketing manager in KU’s marketing department. The former Kris Sell, who was No. 1 player for the Jayhawks in 1999, her senior year, worked in KU’s office of admissions last year. She is married to former KU basketball player C.B. McGrath, an administrative aide in the KU hoops office.
