Jayhawks, Cardinals paired in Maui

By J-W Staff Reports     Sep 25, 2001

Kansas University’s men’s basketball team will face Ball State in the first round of the Maui Invitational on Nov. 19 in Hawaii, tournament officials announced Monday.

Game time is 11:30 a.m. in Hawaii, or 3:30 p.m. Lawrence time.

In other first-round action, South Carolina will play Chaminade, UCLA will face Houston and Seton Hall will take on Duke.

The winner of the KU-Ball State game will play the winner of UCLA-Houston in Tuesday’s second round (8:30 p.m., CST).

The Jayhawks are 1-0 all-time against Ball State after beating the Cardinals, 94-72 on March 18, 1993, at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Chicago, Ill.

All the first-round games except the KU game are slated to be shown on ESPN or ESPN2. It’s a strong possibility the KU-Ball State game will be shown on ESPN Regional.

“Obviously we are not happy about that situation,” KU assistant athletics director/media relations Doug Vance said of the Jayhawks not being on TV. “We are working with ESPN Regional to see if there are any options for us. Part of the problem is the time of day it’s being shown. It’s something we’re still hopeful we can find a remedy to get it on. We will explore all options.”

The semifinals and final will be shown on ESPN. However, consolation games currently are not in ESPN’s plans.
