KU welcomes parents for day

Some Kansas University students will be reunited with their moms and dads this weekend.

Saturday is the university’s annual Parents Day.

“The goal is basically to provide an opportunity for parents to come back and visit their kids,” said Josh Burdette, graduate assistant in the Office of New Student Orientation. “Parents Day is very early this year. Students have been in class 2 1/2 weeks, but they’ve been up here three weeks. Parents can come visit their students, have fun and see students in the college environment.”

Many fraternities and sororities have events planned for the weekend, many of them revolving around the KU-UCLA football game at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Office of New Student Orientation also has events planned, starting with a 9:30 a.m. tailgate breakfast in the parking lot south of Memorial Stadium. Students could purchase advance tickets during orientation.

At halftime of the game, fifth-generation Jayhawk Jacob Vandervelde and his family will be honored.

Student Union Activities is sponsoring comedian Taylor Mason’s performance at 8 p.m. in the Kansas Union Ballroom. Tickets are $7 for the public and $5 for KU students and children ages 5-12. Children 4 and under are free.
