Finals are looming at Kansas University, but Marian Washington wants her players to stop thinking so much.
On the court, that is.
“They need to balance things out,” said KU’s women’s basketball coach. “When they think too much that’s when it starts for us. We need to be so much more relaxed and keep things simple.”
So it’s back to basics for tonight’s first-round Jayhawk Classic contest against Alabama State. Tip is 7 p.m. at Allen Fieldhouse. Oregon (2-3) meets St. John’s (1-4) at 5 p.m. in the other first-round contest.
The winners of both games will play at 7 p.m. Saturday after the losers meet in a 5 p.m. consolation game.
Senior guard Selena Scott says the Jayhawks, who lost two of three games in Puerto Rico last week, will attempt to play a complete game.
“Everybody hasn’t gotten together yet,” said Scott, KU’s leading scorer at 13.6 points per game. “Sometimes we’re all focused other times some (players) are more than others. Some times none of us are focused.”
On Thursday, Washington said Sereeta Jones, a 2000 Kansas signee, will enroll at KU for the spring semester. Jones spent the fall at Palomar Junior College (Calif.) earning credits to make her eligible to attend Kansas.
Washington said Jones, a 6-foot forward, will be a welcome addition to the team, but she does not yet know how much Jones will play.
“Finally, she will be here,” Washington said.
“She should give us a good lift and I’m excited for her to be here.”
