Jayhawks closing in on coach

It remains to be seen if Fresno State football coach Pat Hill is interested in the Kansas University opening, but the Jayhawks certainly are interested in Hill.

Sources told the Journal-World on Tuesday that Hill and KU interim head coach Tom Hayes are among what’s believed to be a group of 4-6 finalists for the Jayhawks’ vacancy. The opening was created when Terry Allen was dismissed earlier this month by KU athletics director Al Bohl.

Other coaches believed to be among the finalists are head coaches Gary Darnell of Western Michigan and Jim Leavitt of South Florida, and defensive coordinators Bill Miller of Michigan State, Gary Gibbs of Louisiana State, Charlie Strong of South Carolina and Phil Bennett of Kansas State.

None of the calls made Tuesday by the Journal-World to Hill, Darnell, Leavitt, Miller, Gibbs, Strong or Bennett were returned.

Hill, who was hired by Bohl in 1997, has told the Fresno Bee that he’s happy with the Bulldogs, but admitted he has spoken with Bohl. It has been speculated that Hill is hoping to re-work his current contract with Fresno State.

“If Pat were interested,” one source told the Journal-World, “why would he be saying all that stuff in the Fresno Bee.”

Bohl reportedly wants to announce the new coach during halftime of the KU-Wake Forest basketball game on Dec. 4.

Sources also said Tuesday that Oklahoma assistant head coach Mike Stoops no longer is being considered, and that former Ohio State head coach John Cooper, former Georgia head coach Jim Donnan and former Arizona head coach Dick Tomey all removed themselves as candidates.
