By J-W Staff Report     Nov 24, 2001

? Nicole Braithwaite scored 21 points and snatched 11 rebounds to boost Hampton to a 67-63 win over Kansas in a first-round game of the San Juan Shootout on Friday afternoon.

Hampton (1-1) built a 35-28 halftime lead and led by as many as 20 points with 9:46 remaining. However, the Jayhawks battled back to close to within two points with 1:33 left.

But a layup by Braithwaite and a pair of free throws by Lineni Noa enabled the Pirates to withstand the late charge by Kansas (1-2). Guard Selena Scott led the Jayhawks with 22 points and seven rebounds, both career highs. Guard KC Hilgenkamp added 13 points and five steals, but KU had only seven points from its starting front line.

Kristin Geoffroy, a 6-foot-6 senior, who leads the Jayhawks in scoring and rebounding, played only 11 minutes because of foul trouble. Geoffroy finished with two rebounds and no points.

Senior Katie Hannon came off the bench to score six points and grab four boards, both career highs, in eight minutes of work.

Hampton also had 10 points and nine rebounds from LaShondra Dixon. The Pirates will meet Tulane in a tourney semifinal today.

Kansas will tangle with Puerto Rico-Mayaguez at noon today in the consolation bracket. The tourney will conclude on Sunday.
