Cyclones seek win for bowl eligibility

By The Associated Press     Nov 17, 2001

? Iowa State needs to beat Kansas to guarantee its second straight winning season.

The Cyclones are 5-4. While they can’t match last year’s 9-3 record, a victory Saturday would make them eligible for another bowl bid and soothe their fans a bit as well.

“Expectations are a little higher because of what we did last year,” wide receiver Craig Campbell said. “Had we not had that season last year, this season would be OK with them. But it’s good they have high expectations. We have high expectations, too.”

The Cyclones’ Ennis Haywood has 993 yards rushing this season and will face a defense that has given up an average of 240 yards a game on the ground.

“It’ll be nice to get 1,000 (yards),” said Haywood, held to 139 yards over the Cyclones’ last three losses, “but the way the season’s been going lately, just to get the running game going again will be even nicer.”

Iowa State is 10-0 when Haywood has rushed for 100 or more yards.

“We’d really like to oil Ennis up this week and get more carries and more yards for him,” coach Dan McCarney said. “We’d like to see him definitely in the 20s as far as carries.”

Seneca Wallace is second among Big 12 quarterbacks in total offense at 239 yards per game and holds the Big 12 record with 18 straight completions.
