Jayhawks land four signees

A fax machine.

That’s what Kansas University women’s basketball coach Marian Washington and her staff huddled around for part of the morning and late afternoon Wednesday.

The only time she and her assistant coaches were away from it was when they conducted basketball practice.

But when Washington got back to her office around 4 p.m. she found that the fax had stopped working. That’s not a good thing to happen on national signing day.

That’s kind of like your car breaking down on the way to your own wedding. You know you’ll get to the altar eventually, but the problems and worries it caused are not needed.

After a few hectic moments, Washington found a solution and pieces of paper started spitting out of the machine again.

Kansas signed four recruits for the 2002-2003 season and could sign three more.

“It will be our strongest class in the last three years and probably one of the strongest in the Big 12,” Washington said.

Nichelle Roberts, a 6-foot-1 forward from Houston, chose Kansas over Southern Methodist, Rice and conference rivals Missouri, Texas and Colorado. Last year, Roberts was a Street & Smith All-America honorable mention and a member of Texas’ Class 5A all-state team. Erica Hallman, a 5-8 point guard from Covington, Ky., was recruited by Kentucky and perennial top-10 school Old Dominion. She averaged 22.8 points and 5.6 assists last season and is a candidate for Miss Kentucky Basketball this year.

The Jayhawks signed two Kansas players, too. Ebony Haliburton, a 5-11 forward from Overland Park Aquinas, helped her team to a 24-1 record and 6A state championship last year. Crystal Kemp, a 6-2 forward from Topeka High, picked Kansas over Iowa.

She averaged 22.6 points per game last year.
