A new NCAA rule will allow Div. I-A teams to play 12 regular season games during the 2002 season, and Kansas University has 11 of those dates locked.
KU associate athletics director Richard Konzem is trying to fill at Sept. 28 opening.
“We’re talking to various schools,” Konzem said. “We already have six home games so it will probably be on the road.”
KU could have an open date that weekend and play its 12th game on Nov. 23. That slot opened when Iowa State moved its game with the Jayhawks to the Labor Day weekend.
“It would be nice to have a break during the season,” Konzem said of a Sept. 28 open date. “That’s also NASCAR weekend, and that could cause a little bit of a logistics problem.”
Kansas had an open date during this year’s inaugural Winston Cup race at Kansas Speedway, but Konzem said he would rather not schedule a non-conference foe as the season finale.
KU’s Big 12 Conference southern division foes will change next year. Instead of Texas, Oklahoma and Texas Tech, KU will play Baylor, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M.
Non-league foes on the ’02 schedule are Bowling Green, Nevada-Las Vegas and Div. I-AA Southwest Missouri State, a school the Jayhawks met in their season opener this year.
Here is Kansas University’s 2002 schedule as of today:
Aug. 31 at Iowa State
Sept. 7 at Nevada-Las Vegas
Sept. 14 Southwest Missouri State
Sept. 21 Bowling Green
Sept. 28 TBA
Oct. 5 at Baylor
Oct. 12 Colorado (homecoming)
Oct. 19 Texas A&M
Oct. 26 at Missouri
Nov. 2 Kansas State
Nov. 9 at Nebraska
Nov. 16 Oklahoma State
