Kansas' Nick Collison (4) pulls down a rebound against FHSU's Jarod Eck.

Jeff Boschee’s actions spoke way louder than his words on Tuesday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

Boschee, KU’s 6-foot-1 senior guard from Valley City, N.D., who mumbled in hushed tones because of a sore throat and congestion in his lungs, swished five of seven three-pointers and scored 19 points in the Jayhawks’ 95-41 victory over Fort Hays State.

“My throat’s been scratchy. It’s gotten a lot better. Before it was to where I couldn’t talk at all,” Boschee said.

“Hopefully it’ll get better and I’ll be ready for Hawaii.”

He said he hoped he’d feel better but have the same shooting touch during Monday’s Maui Invitational opener against Ball State as he had in Tuesday’s rout of the Div. II Tigers.

Boschee had missed his only two three-point tries in last week’s exhibition opener against EA Sports.

“My shot started going down tonight. I look back at what Michael Jordan says about the rim on a good night it looks huge,” Boschee said. “I thought I played better than I did last game. Getting my shot to fall helped me stay in the flow of the game.”

As a team, the Jayhawks hit nine of 12 threes to the Tigers’ six of 22. KU hit 62.7 percent of its shots to Fort Hays’ 24.1 percent.

“Coach (Roy) Williams told us we needed to keep pushing the ball and it’d help create more than just the fastbreak points. I understand now. We do need to push the ball up the floor so we can kick it out and hit the outside shot. Tonight we took the opportunity to grab it, get it and go,” Boschee said.

KU’s guards were most efficient. Boschee had three assists to one turnover. Kirk Hinrich had nine assists to no turnovers and Aaron Miles seven assists to one bobble.

“I think we made dramatic improvement tonight defensively and offensively,” Boschee said.

l
Stats of interest: If Tuesday’s game counted in the record books Kirk Hinrich’s eight assists the first half would tie for second most in a half by a KU player in Williams’ 14 years at KU; KU’s three-point percentage in the first half (eight of nine for 88.9 percent) would be highest in a half since the team hit nine of nine against North Carolina State in 1994; KU’s three-point percentage for the game (9 of 12 for 75 percent) would be highest since 9 of 12 versus Louisville in ’93; the 44-point halftime lead would be biggest since a 46-point margin against Oral Roberts in 1993; Fort Hays’ 41 points would be fewest points allowed by a KU team in the Williams era in Allen Fieldhouse and fewest overall vs. KU since Oklahoma State totaled 37 versus in 1999 in Kemper Arena.

l
Outboarded: KU was outrebounded by the Tigers, 37-34. The last time KU was outrebounded and still won was March 9, 2000, when Kansas State outboarded KU, 43-34, but lost 84-60.

l
Nice paycheck: Fort Hays State received guarantee money of $25,000 for appearing at Allen Fieldhouse.

l
Voice of Jayhawks, Tigers: Tuesday was a nostalgic night for KU play-by-play announcer Bob Davis, who was the voice of Fort Hays State athletics from 1968-84.

“I love this. It brings back some great memories,” Davis said. “I think it’s great players from the Div. II schools get to experience playing KU at Allen Fieldhouse.”

l
Ford in the house: North Carolina graduate Phil Ford was in the fieldhouse, working as a color man for the Jayhawk TV network.

Ford, a former North Carolina assistant, currently works in Carolina’s educational foundation, which raises money for the UNC athletics department. He’d last been in Allen Fieldhouse in the early ’90s, when he spoke at Williams’ summer camp.

“It’s great to be back in Allen Fieldhouse. There’s a lot of history in this arena. It’s just a really great place to see a game,” said Ford, who attended many KU games during his days as a guard for the old Kansas City Kings.

Ford also is a color man on the Tar Heel radio network.

Former KU assistant Jerry Green also attended and sat on press row.
