Two special events are being planned in conjunction with University Theatre’s upcoming production of “The Cherry Orchard” by Anton Chekhov.
“Chekhov: A Staged Reading” and “Acting Chekhov: A Discussion,” will be presented at 8 p.m. Saturday in Crafton-Preyer Theatre in Murphy Hall at Kansas University.
The staged reading is directed by Risa Brainin, associate artistic director for Missouri Repertory Theatre. The discussion will be moderated by Kansas University theater professor John Gronbeck-Tedesco; participants are Kansas University theater faculty Paul Meier, Marianne Kubik, John Staniunas and Doug Weaver; Jeanne Averill, theater instructor at Lawrence High School; and Maia Kipp, a KU lecturer in Slavic languages and literature.
The presentation is by P.A.T.H., or the Professional Acting Teacher’s Theatre recently started by Staniunas.
Secondly, an open rehearsal for “The Cherry Orchard” will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Crafton-Preyer Theatre. Participants can observe Staniunas and Kubik working with cast members to stage the party scene and grand ball. They also can join the improvisation as a party guest for the rehearsal.
Both events are free and open to the public.
