Kansas University athletics director Al Bohl certainly is living up to his pledge to move quickly to find a replacement for former football coach Terry Allen.
According to a published report, Bohl has spoken with Fresno State interim AD Scott Johnson Bohl’s replacement at FSU about football coach Pat Hill.
Bohl would neither confirm nor deny Tuesday night whether such a conversation took place.
“I’m not talking about any candidates and I don’t know where that’s coming from,” Bohl said. “I wouldn’t talk about any candidates.”
Hill and Johnson did not return calls from the Journal-World.
The Fresno Bee reported today that Bohl didn’t specifically ask Johnson for permission to speak with Hill, but that Bohl “implied” he would like to approach the coach and Johnson “implied” that it would be OK.
Bohl spent five years as Fresno State’s AD prior to coming to Kansas and Johnson has been serving as his replacement on an interim basis.
Johnson told Bohl he didn’t intend on letting his football coach get away.
Hill told The Bee that while an opportunity to coach in the Big 12 was intriguing, “I want to stay at Fresno State. There’s some things that need to be ironed out, but Kansas is not a part of my thought process.”
While Bohl wouldn’t speak specifically about candidates, he did talk in general about the urgency of the search.
“I’ve named a search committee and we’re moving forward,” he said. “We’re going to try to move as quickly as we can, but when you go through a process such as this and it’s such an important decision, I wouldn’t want to put an exact time line on it.
“But I want to get it done as soon as possible.”
Bohl said he’s targeting the end of the month or early December, but that the Thanksgiving weekend could hamper KU’s effort.
“That’s just something you deal with,” he said. “You still want to get it done in a timely fashion and work as quickly as you possibly can. We’re trying for the beginning of December, but it would really be out of bounds for me to say it will be done by this time.
“There’s a lot of people to look at who are involved in their seasons right now in the NFL and college level.”
