Future Kansas University basketball player Jeff Graves will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee today.
Graves, a 6-foot-9, 262-pound sophomore power forward from Iowa Western Community College, is expected to miss three games. He’ll sit out today’s game against Neosho County CC, Saturday’s game against Pratt at the Salina Brown Mackie Classic and also IWCC’s home opener Tuesday against Cloud County CC.
Graves, who fell awkwardly at a recent practice, has loose cartilage around his right meniscus.
“It’s a speck, a minor, minor deal,” Iowa Western Community College assistant coach Trent Lovewell said. “I had the same surgery four years ago. I was walking the next day and ran in five to six days.
“The doctor goes in and makes three tiny incisions in the knee at an angle with the scope and shaves it (cartilage) off to even it off.”
Graves has no ligament damage.
“The ligaments are good. There are no tears,” Lovewell said. “It’s like a splinter on the finger.”
Graves chose Kansas over Illinois, Missouri, Louisville and Long Beach State in recruiting.
Gregory in NBDL: Former Kansas guard Kenny Gregory will play for the Mobile (Ala.) Revelers of the new National Basketball Development League this season.
The Revelers tabbed Gregory in the 10th round of Thursday’s draft of former college players. Gregory was the 79th player chosen.
Other Big 12 players who were selected: Texas’ Gabe Muoneke and Texas Tech’s Johnny Phillips by the Columbus (Ga.) Riverdragons; Texas A&M’s Joe White by the Fayetteville (N.C.) Patriots; Oklahoma’s Victor Avila by the North Charleston (Va.) Lowgators and Colorado’s Jaquay Walls by the Asheville (N.C.) Altitude.
Ex-Jayhawk Eric Chenowith likely will be picked in the USDL’s supplemental draft on Saturday. That draft is for players cut at NBA training camp. Chenowith was recently sliced by both the New York Knicks and Sacramento Kings.
The eight-team league begin its 56-game regular season schedule on Nov. 16.
Recruiting: Kansas has received commitments from two players this men’s basketball recruiting season and hopes to fill a third slot with either Andre Igoudala (6-6, Springfield, Ill.) or Hassan Adams (6-4, Los Angeles).
For those already looking ahead to next year’s recruiting, the Jayhawks apparently are pursuing at least two highly touted players.
Shannon Brown, a 6-2, 185-pound junior guard from Proviso East High in Maywood, Ill., tells rivalshoops.com he’s considering KU, Illinois, Marquette, Iowa, Michigan State and Notre Dame.
He’s already made an unofficial visit to Illinois.
“I don’t have a leader,” Brown told analyst Mike Sullivan, squelching rumors he’s committed to Illinois.
Thomas Gardner, a 6-2 shooting guard from Portland, Ore., told CNNSI.com he’s considering KU, Arizona, Oregon State, North Carolina, Michigan State, Cincinnati and UConn. Gardner is a former teammate of current KU freshmen Michael Lee and Aaron Miles.
