Two members of Heidrick and Struggles Inc., an Atlanta headhunting firm, met Thursday with the Kansas University committee charged with identifying a new athletics director.

Chuck Knapp, a firm partner, and Mark Reiff had their first session with the committee at Parrott Complex after meeting with Chancellor Robert Hemenway earlier in the day.

“It was productive, I thought,” said Reggie Robinson, counselor to the chancellor and committee chair. “We learned about Heidrick and Struggles and how they go about this kind of process.”

The two representatives of the CEO search firm declined to talk to the media. Committee members have also deferred to Robinson as their spokesperson.

“At this meeting we shared our perspective of what we’re looking for,” Robinson said. “Now they can go about aggressively compiling a list of candidates that are potential fits for KU.”

After the session with the search committee, Knapp and Reiff talked to athletics department employees in Hadl Auditorium. Media members were not allowed to sit in.

KU is looking for a successor to Bob Frederick, who resigned earlier this month to become a teacher in the KU school of education. Frederick was the university’s AD for 14 years.

“We’re looking at mid-June as our next major step,” Robinson said, adding they’re “still shooting” for the July 1 deadline.

After receiving the list, the committee will be charged with narrowing it to two or three candidates and submit those names to the chancellor.

Frederick’s tenure will officially end on June 30, but he is expected to depart before then. No decision has been made about naming an interim AD, according to Doug Vance, associate AD for media relations.
