KU grads ready for prime time

Two Kansas University graduates are on prime-time television tonight one in the Fox network’s new reality series, “Boot Camp”; the other singing the lead role in “La Boheme” on PBS.

Kasi Brown, a Lawrence High School graduate who earned a bachelor’s degree in theater and film in 1996 from KU, is one of the 16 “recruits” on “Boot Camp.” The show is broadcast at 8 p.m. on Sunflower Cablevision channel 4.

During a phone call from her home in Los Angeles, Brown said she was restricted by Fox from talking about the series.

According to the “Boot Camp” Web site, 16 contestants give up their civilian lives to participate in the chance to win $500,000. Drill instructors put the recruits through a military-style training program and other activities to make them confront their fears.

The series runs for eight episodes. At the end of each episode, contestants are evaluated by their peers and those considered the weak links in the squad are rejected.

Brown was known in Lawrence in the mid-1990s for her roles in University Theatre, Seem-To-Be Players and Apple Valley Farm productions.

On a more artistic slant, soprano Maria Kanyova, who earned her master’s and doctorate degrees from KU under the name of Mary Jane Kania, will sing the part of Mimi in “La Boheme” for “Live From Lincoln Center.”

The opera, performed by New York City Opera, airs at 7 p.m. on Sunflower Cablevision channels 7 and 11.

Kanyova joined the Chicago Lyric Opera Center for American Artists in 1998. She also has performed with Glimmerglass Opera, Utah Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Tulsa Opera and Charlotte Symphony Orchestra Society.

Her most recent performance in Lawrence was last May, when she was a soloist for Lawrence Civic Choir’s Silver Anniversary Celebration.
