Kansas University fell victim to strong pitching and hitting in an 8-2 baseball loss to Michigan on Saturday in the Jayhawk Spring Showcase at Hoglund Ballpark.

Michigan’s Bobby Korecky threw a complete game six-hitter, striking out three Jayhawks and walking none.

“He doesn’t walk anybody ever,” KU coach Bobby Randall said. “He throws that ball where he wants to. He’s a great pitcher.”

Korecky kept the ball low, forcing KU into 19 groundouts.

“His ball was sinking,” Randall said. “Movement’s worth four miles an hour, location’s worth four miles an hour, that’s eight miles an hour and I’d guess he’s throwing in the upper 80s. Truthfully, I thought we did a pretty good job battling him.”

Third baseman Brock Koman led the Michigan attack at the plate, going 4-for-5 with five RBIs. He hit a two-run double in both the third and sixth innings, and led off the fifth inning with a solo homer.

Michigan scored two runs in both the third and sixth innings, and crossed the plate once in each of the second, fourth, seventh and ninth innings.

KU (11-10) plated the first run of the game when John Nelson scored on a passed ball after leading off the inning with a triple. The Jayhawks scored their other run on a Jesse Gremminger home run in the seventh inning.

“He got behind, he got three balls, and he seemed like a guy who doesn’t want to walk anybody so he gave me one pretty fast,” Gremminger said of the home run. “He didn’t do that to many people.”

Justin Wilcher took the loss for KU, allowing four runs in 41*3 innings. Casey Spanish was the only Jayhawk with more than one hit.

Kansas will face Michigan again today at 11 a.m. and will finish the Spring Showcase against Eastern Michigan at 3 p.m.

Randall said Jake Wright would start the game against Michigan but the starter for the second game had not been decided.
