A Kansas University football player bonded out of the Douglas County Jail Thursday afternoon after he was arrested for failing to appear in court for a misdemeanor alcohol charge.

Algernon “Algie” Atkinson, 20, was released when he posted $100 bond. He was jailed at about 11 p.m. Wednesday after authorities arrested him on a bench warrant issued after Atkinson failed to appear at a Monday hearing, Douglas County prosecutors said.

Atkinson was to appear at a hearing during which his diversion agreement with the Douglas County district attorney’s office would be reviewed. He was charged April 12 with misdemeanor purchase or consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Standard conditions for this diversion are 10 hours of community service, a $200 fine and attending an alcohol information school, all within si months. Atkinson’s next hearing was continued to April, when he would have another diversion review hearing.

From Skokie, Ill., Atkinson was a junior linebacker last year.
