Kansas places sixth at Big 12 championships

? Kansas University’s men’s swim team placed six of six teams at the Big 12 championships.

Texas won in a meet record 1,105 points. UT was followed by Texas A&M (622), Iowa State (487.50), Nebraska (475.50), Missouri (353.5) and Kansas (275.5).

Dustin Chalfant established himself as the fourth-fastest 200 breaststroker in KU history. The Topeka native placed fifth overall in 2:02.72. KU’s Chad Sunderland was sixth in 2:03.68.

Brian Soria and Jon Reyes teamed for a strong 1-2 combination in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Soria placed fifth in 15:40.59. Reyes was seventh in 15:50.27.

Rob Kelly and Mitch Loper finished just .01 seconds apart during the consolation finals of the 200-yard backstroke, as the top four finishers in the consolation were separated by 0.33 seconds.

Kelly placed third in the consolations 11th overall in a season-best time of 1:50.56. Loper finished one place behind his teammate, taking 12th in 1:50.57. In the 200 butterfly, Matt Hanson (1:51.74) and Matt Eklund (1:54.84) finished 13th and 16th overall, respectively.
