? Charlie Gruber red-shirted this past outdoor track season at Kansas University.

That doesn’t mean Gruber, a senior-to-be from Denver, has been idle.

Gruber, who will run in the U.S. championships June 21-24 in Eugene, Ore., won the 1,500 meters at the U.S. Open on Saturday. Gruber, who was competing for Lawrence Track Club, was clocked in 3:41.48. Jason Lunn of Nike was second in 3:41.65 and Mike Miller (unattached) third in 3:42.44.

Gruber has had a good spring, early-summer season.

He won the mile at the Kansas Relays in 4:04.0 and anchored the first-place sprint medley relay team.

He was third in the mile at the IAAF Grand Prix meet in New Jersey with a time of 3:59.28. He slipped to 10th in the Oregon Track Classic mile in 3:58.47. He also placed third in the Victoria International Classic mile (4:00.82).

He will run in the USA Outdoor championships June 21-24 in Eugene, Ore., then compete in five races in Canada and/or Europe in late June to mid-July. If he places in the top three at USA’s he would qualify for the world championships in July in Canada.
