“We really had to keep our heads and make sure each possession was meaningful,” said KU coach Marian Washington, whose team claimed its first Big 12 Conference road victory.
The Jayhawks (8-10, 2-5 Big 12) had defeated the Wildcats 78-67 on Jan. 13. KU led by as many as 27 points in the second half of that game before KSU closed with a late rally.
This time, the Wildcats (11-7, 1-6) stayed within striking distance.
Junior Kristin Rethman, who averages 12.6 points per game, led K-State with 22 points in the Jan. 13 contest but was held to five points on Saturday. Kim Woodlee, who averages 12.8 ppg, was also held under her average with six.
Johnson, a senior forward, led Kansas with 22 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Reves had 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Junior guard Selena Scott added 11 points, and senior guard Jennifer Jackson had 12 points, seven assists and just two turnovers.
The Jayhawks’ 13 turnovers tied a season low set in the first matchup with K-State.
Kansas led by as many as nine points in the second half, but freshmen Ohlde and Danielle Hutton brought K-State back. The Wildcats cut the deficit to three points five times in the final seven minutes but could not tie or take the lead.
Buckets by Hutton and Ohlde cut the lead to three, 63-60, with 1:30 remaining. After KU junior KC Hilgenkamp made it 65-60, Hutton hit two free throws for K-State.
KU guard Jennifer Jackson missed the front end of a one-and-one with 24.6 seconds left, but K-State could not get off a three-point shot in the final seconds.
With KU guarding the perimeter, Shalondra Booker shot a layup and missed with 3.1 seconds left. The ball went out of bounds to Kansas State, giving the Wildcats one last chance. But Ohlde, who had taken only one three-point shot all season, had her shot rejected by Reves.
Ohlde led K-State with 21 points. Hutton scored 15 points and led all players with eight rebounds. April Sailors added 11 points.
Hilgenkamp added seven points for KU, which got 62 of its 65 points from its starters. Hutton and Sailors both came off the bench for KSU.
