Jayhawks stumble, Johnson injured in loss to OSU

? Oklahoma State’s first conference victory of the season came at the expense of the Kansas women’s basketball team.

The Jayhawks (7-8, 1-3 Big 12) had snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday with a 78-67 home victory over Kansas State. But KU committed 26 turnovers on Wednesday at Gallagher-Iba Arena in a 61-53 loss to OSU.

KU senior forward Brooke Reves recorded her third double-double of the season with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in 39 minutes.

Senior guard Jennifer Jackson followed up her career-high 23-point performance against Kansas State with 21 points against OSU, but it wasn’t enough for the Jayhawks, who lost starting forward Jaclyn Johnson early in the second half.

Oklahoma State led 30-23 at halftime. Johnson, KU’s leading scorer and rebounder with averages of 16.9 points and 8.1 rebounds, sprained her left ankle in the opening minutes of the second half and did not return. She finished with one point and no rebounds in 18 minutes.

After a 5-1 start, KU has lost seven of its past nine.

OSU (9-7, 1-4) ended its Big 12 drought with 17 points from forward Kara Faulk and 11 from guard Jessica Spinner. Center Trisha Skibbe added nine points and 16 rebounds.

OSU outrebounded the Jayhawks 43-30 and made 14 of 18 free throws, compared to 8 of 14 for Kansas.

Reserve post player Nikki White had seven rebounds and four points in 21 minutes. White and Reves were the only Jayhawks with more than two rebounds. KU made 45.7 percent of its shots, compared to 32.8 for OSU, but the Cowgirls grabbed 24 offensive boards. KU had seven.

Up next for Kansas is Saturday’s 8 p.m. game at Colorado (12-3, 3-1). The Jayhawks return home next Wednesday for a 7:05 p.m. game against No. 13 Oklahoma (12-4, 4-1) at Allen Fieldhouse.
