Eric Chenowith is getting a lot of air time on national radio this week.
Chenowith, Kansas’ 7-foot-1 center from Orange, Calif., blasted former Oklahoma State guard Doug Gottlieb on Jim Rome’s talk show on Wednesday.
“Last thing I heard is he was announcing Div. III basketball. I hope that’s working out for you, Doug,” Chenowith said of OSU’s undrafted point guard, whose basketball career appears to be over.
Gottlieb, a long-time pal of Chenowith who also hails from Orange, fought back on Thursday, calling Rome’s show unannounced.
He said Chenowith was KU’s third-best big man and as far as being a potential lottery pick: “The only lottery he’ll win is if he buys a ticket at 7-11.”
All in good fun, Chenowith is planning on calling the show again today with his rebuttal.
Recruiting update KU’s search for a big man is taking the Jayhawks to Twin Falls, Idaho. Insidersreport.com indicates the Jayhawks are recruiting Uche Okafor, a 7-0, 245-pound sophomore from the College of Southern Idaho. The defensive specialist from Nigeria, who averages 8.8 points and 7.2 boards and three blocks a game, has attracted interest from KU, Missouri, North Carolina State, Illinois, Utah, Florida State, North Carolina, Connecticut and Auburn.
Several NBA teams have scouted his games.
Recruiting II Kansas has evaluated Seminole State (Okla.) CC sophomore pivot Ermal Kuqo, a 6-10, 270-pounder. Jucojunction.com says coaches from Kansas and Connecticut attended the Trojans’ Dec. 4 game against Bacone College. Kuqo was headed to Tulsa last year but decommitted when Bill Self left for Illinois.
Kuqo, who averages 12 points and 12 boards, played at Fort Scott CC his freshman year before moving to Seminole this season. Illinois is a heavy favorite to land Kuqo, who also is considering Kansas State and Florida State.
Recruiting III Matt Walsh, a 6-5 junior forward from Ft. Washington, Pa., tells High Major Hoops he’s added KU to his list of schools. Maryland is the favorite to land Walsh, who also is considering a batch of Eastern schools, including Villanova.
Up next Kansas heads to Oklahoma Saturday for a noon tipoff. The Jayhawks are 12-1, 1-0 in the Big 12. Oklahoma is 12-2, 1-1.
