Leavenworth High power forward Wayne Simien is a McDonald’s All-American.

Simien, a 6-foot-8 senior who will play college basketball at Kansas University, has been picked to play in the annual McDonald’s All-American high school basketball game, set for 8 p.m., March 28, at Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The announcement was to be made before Saturday’s Senior Night game between Leavenworth and Manhattan at Leavenworth’s gym. Simien is the first Kansan prepster selected since Lawrence High’s Danny Manning in 1984.

Simien also has been selected for the Capital Classic all-star game, April 7, at the MCI Center in Washington.

He’ll be competing in Lawrence next week. The Pioneers will meet Free State in a first-round sub-state game at approximately 7:45 p.m. Thursday in Lawrence High’s gym.

Simien recently learned he will not need surgery to repair his right shoulder, which popped out of place in a game against SM East on Feb. 2.

Sources say KU signee Aaron Miles, a point guard from Portland, Ore., also has made the McDonald’s team. The official announcement will be made Monday night on ESPN.

KU signees Michael Lee (Portland) and Keith Langford (Crowley, Texas) were among the 100 finalists for the game.

North Crowley wins

KU signee Langford, a 6-5, 202 pound shooting guard, scored 27 points to lead North Crowley (Texas) High to an 82-56 victory over Arlington Northwest in a Class 4A Region One area playoff game Friday night.

Langford’s Panthers (29-4) will play Arlington Carroll in the Class 4A Region I quarterfinals on Tuesday. Langford scored 19 points the first half and contributed nine rebounds.

He will have knee surgery right after the season. He is hoping to recover in about a month and compete in some all-star games.
