? Kansas University’s men’s and women’s track teams both placed ninth at the Big 12 Indoor track and field championships Saturday at Devaney Center.

The Jayhawk men totaled 46 points 7.5 points behind sixth-place Missouri. Nebraska won with 124 points. KU’s women totaled 32 points. Nebraska won with 143.5.

KU’s Andy Morris placed second in the heptathlon with a personal-best 5,468 points. Thirds went to Charlie Gruber in the mile (4:05.94) and Andy Tate in the 3,000 (8:20.84).

Jabari Wamble finished fifth in the 40, while Brian Blachly finished 7th in the 1,000 meters.

On the women’s side, Katy Eisenmenger placed fourth in the 1,000. Laura Lavoie was fifth in the 800. Sherre-Khan Blackmon placed seventh in the 600, while Jennifer Foster was eighth in the shot put. Sarah Schraeder placed 12th in the high jump, while Brandi Taylor was 12th in the triple jump. The 1,600 relay team earned fourth.

“We expected the guys to finish higher,” KU coach Stanley Redwine said. “We had some disappointments in some events, but on the other hand we had some great performances. We still need to work harder and learn how to compete at a level like this. We are excited for the things that went well but at the same time we are disappointed about things that didn’t go well. We are not a perfect team yet and we need to strive towards that goal.

“It was exciting to see everyone run, throw and jump as well as they did,” Redwine added. “The athletes stepped up this weekend and I think this was a great weekend for the future of our team.”

Overall, Lesley Owusu ran the fastest 400 in the country this year to lead the Nebraska women. Owusu, a senior from Slough, Berkshire, England, set a Big 12 meet with her 52.37 time in the 400 meters.
