An ailing back has sidelined Kansas senior guard-forward Luke Axtell from Saturday’s game with Iowa State.
Roy Williams, Kansas University men’s head basketball coach, announced Thursday that Axtell would sit out the ISU game.
Because of Axtell’s persistent low-back pain, the medical staff has decided to hold Axtell out of basketball for up to seven days so he can concentrate on treatment and rehabilition and avoid further irritation to his back and spine.
“There is no exact timetable on when Luke will return,” Williams said. “But we do need Luke to play effectively, and you can’t do that unless you’re healthy. This is another big blow for our basketball team at this time, but we’ve got to move on and hope that this will help us get Luke more healthy and ready to play for us as we get to tournament time.”
Axtell, a 6-10 Austin, Tex., native, is averaging 5.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in 16.3 minutes of action this season.
