Both Kansas and Texas Tech were guilty of playing perhaps the ugliest game of the season tonight in Allen Fieldhouse. Missed shots, turnovers, travelling, blown layups and airballs were the rule. In the first twelve minutes, KU turned the ball over twelve times and took twleve shots, making only three. The two teams combined for 31 turnovers in the first half. The bottom line is that both teams’ defenses dominated the game from beginning to end.
Kansas did jump out to a 6-2 lead, but this was after the first five minutes. By the time Texas Tech completed a 13-2 run, the half was nearly over. Tech held a 21-16 lead by halftime.
The second half started out with more of the same, but the longer the game went on, the higher both teams cranked up their intensity. The turnovers stopped. The shots started falling consistently. It became a game.
Tech built a double digit lead halfway through the second half, but Kansas fought back to keep the game within about four points for the remainder.
With the deficit cut to two points in the final minute, Kansas could do nothing but foul Texas Tech in hopes of saving the game. Tech’s foul shooting dashed that hope for good.
Jaclyn Johnson had an incredible night. She shot 6-14 from the floor, snagged nine rebounds, and ended up with 20 points. The rest of the Jayhawks combined for 8-32 shooting, resulting in only 33% accuracy on the night.
