Kansas University’s women’s basketball team snapped its two-year losing streak in season openers Sunday, when it defeated Binghamton, 77-53, at Allen Fieldhouse.
Four Jayhawks reached double figures in scoring led by senior Kaylee Brown, who tied her career high with 19 points. Brown scored 16 in the first half as KU used an early 19-4 run and late 22-8 spurt to take a commanding 48-22 lead over the Bearcats.
“I was pleased. I felt like we addressed our exhibition games and played as if they counted,” KU coach Bonnie Henrickson said. “They played like veterans. I thought they stepped up and played older than they probably are right now. They played with great confidence and great poise.”
Fellow senior Crystal Kemp recorded her 18th career-double with an 18-point and 10-rebound afternoon.
Two Jayhawks newcomers shined in their debuts as well.
Freshman guard Ivana Catic scored 13 points, while dishing out seven assists, while junior college transfer Shaquina Mosley chipped in 10 points and eight assists in her debut.
Catics’ and Mosley’s point totals marked the first time that two KU first-year players scored in double figures in the same game since Kemp and senior Erica Hallman achieved the feat versus Wichita State on Dec. 11, 2002.
The eight and seven assists by Mosely and Catic represent the most assists by any Jayhawk in their debut since assists began to be recorded in the 1981-82 season.
Binghamton, which shot just 32.7-percent was led Rachel Laws’ 20 points. Bearcat coach Rich Conover complimented Henrickson and the young KU squad.
“They have great speed out on the perimeter. Every time we had a miscue with the ball on the offensive end, it was an easy bucket on the other end,” Conover said. “I feel like coach Henrickson has a great team and a great staff that is going to be on the rise.”
