Undergraduate students score research awards

Twelve Kansas University students will receive Undergraduate Research Awards for the spring semester.

The $500 awards, from KU’s general research fund, support independent research by undergraduates at KU’s Lawrence campus and are administered by the University Honors Program.

Selection criteria includes the quality of the proposal, the student’s academic record and ability to complete the project and the educational value of the research to the student.

Winners and their projects are:

Nooshi Soltani, Lawrence, senior in political science and sociology, “Correlation of Reproductive Legislation and Childcare Services in Three States.”

Alicia Beckmon, Leawood, senior in psychology and human development, “The Influence of Knowledge on Memory in Young Children: The Role of Encoding Processes.”

John Bradley Barger, Lenexa, junior in organismal biology, “A Determination of the Sand Preferences of Antlions.”

Jason Weller, Lenexa, senior in civil engineering, “Fiber Reinforced Plastics Pullout and Splitting Tests.”

Lindsay Robbins, Olathe, senior in mechanical engineering, “Interactive Design, Test and Validate the Mechanical Analogue Facet Joint.”

Rachel Hull, Prairie Village, senior in architectural engineering, “Ring Tests for Fiber-Reinforced Composite Tubes.”

Jonna Armbruster, Hutchinson, junior in psychology, “The Effects of Phonotactic Probability on Speech Production.”

Jessica Johnson, Salina, senior in American studies, “Brooklyn, Ill.: A Video Documentary About the Political and Cultural Significance of a Black Town in 21st Century America.”

Kyle Johnson, Wichita, sophomore in chemical engineering, “The Development of Ultravioletly Cured Polymers by Way of Molecular Optimization with Applications in Chemical Milling Maskants.”

April Adkins, Kansas City, Kan., senior in psychology, “Social Support and Socioeconomic Status: An Examination of Social Support Within and Across Socioeconomic Levels.”

Elaine Gluck, Littleton, Colo., senior in textile design, “Masks of Emotions.”

Andrew Wessel, Omaha, Neb., senior in microbiology “Purification of a Chaperone Protein Necessary for Invasion of Shigella.”
