South Carolina State's Moses Malone Jr., left, pressures Kansas' Aaron Miles.

Roy Williams is as superstitious as any coach out there.

That’s why he bristled a bit late Saturday night when discussing Kansas University’s first-half free-throw shooting in the Jayhawks’ 106-73 victory over South Carolina State at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks hit their first 17 free throws. Nick Collison finally missed the final try with less than a second left in the half.

It seems KU’s center scoreboard flashed the fact the Jayhawks were a perfect 17-of-17 before Collison stepped to the line.

“Whoever is in charge of the video board, don’t put up 17 straight free throws. We missed the next frickin’ free throw. If we stop putting that stuff up and talking about it we’d be better off,” Williams said.

Earlier this year, he needled a broadcaster for lauding KU for hitting 20 of 25 free throws versus Arizona. The next game KU hit 20 of 40 against Wake Forest.

Floor burn: KU junior Jeff Boschee hit three of eight threes and scored 11 points with five assists in 32 minutes.

He played in discomfort the last 14 minutes after sliding on the floor and suffering a floor burn on his left (nonshooting) hand.

Boschee iced his hand on the bench late and had his hand bandaged after the contest.

“I hit the ground and really slid on the floor. My skin slid like this and really burned it,” he said motioning with his left hand. “It’s blistered, just a burn, an abrasion. I iced it because it was throbbing, burning.”

Next up for KU is a trip to Boschee’s home state of North Dakota. KU will meet North Dakota at 1 p.m. next Saturday in Grand Forks, N.D.

Face in crowd: Stuart Naismith, the 74-year-old grandson of Dr. James Naismith, attended the game. It was his first game at Allen Fieldhouse since he was 3 years old. Naismith lives in Binghamton, N.Y. He was introduced to KU coach Williams after the game. James Naismith, of course, invented the game of basketball.
Amazing stat: Collison and Drew Gooden entered Saturday’s game with 946 points apiece. Gooden has passed Collison. He scored 25 points to Collison’s 14.
Schedule: KU will practice today, then take off Monday and Tuesday while working on finals. On Wednesday, the Jayhawks will hold a short practice then return full-go Thursday in preparation for Saturday’s game at North Dakota.
Hall of Fame: Bob Lockwood and Dick Reamon were inducted into KU’s Athletic Hall of Fame during halftime ceremonies. Lockwood has been involved with KU’s athletics department the past 40 years as an athlete and coach. Reamon was a four-year letterman on the KU swim team. He earned honorable mention All-America honors his senior year.
Stats, facts: KU is 8-1 for the second straight season and 3-0 all-time versus S.C. State. The Jayhawks have won 15 straight home games over unranked nonconference opponents. Hinrich collected assist No. 400. Boschee passed Milt Newton for 25th place on KU’s scoring list. He has 1,176 points and is 31 shy of Jacque Vaughn. Collison had a season-high six blocks, besting his previous high of three. Six blocks ties his career high, which he’s accomplished twice. Gooden’s 11 free throws tied a career high. He had 11 versus DePaul on Dec. 12, 2000.
