Kansas University’s football coaching staff grew by one on Saturday, when Nick Quartaro Iowa State’s assistant head coach/wide receivers coach was named offensive coordinator by head coach Mark Mangino

“Nick has played a prominent role in the turnaround at both Iowa State and Kansas State,” Mangino said. “He is an excellent teacher and will provide great leadership for our offense.”

The 46-year-old Quartaro coached with Mangino at Kansas State from 1991-93.

Prior to spending four seasons with the Cyclones, Quartaro was the head coach at Fordham from 1994-97. He directed the previously winless Rams to a school-best third-place finish and 4-2 record in the Patriot Conference during his final season. He also spent two years as head coach at Drake University from 1987-88.

Quartaro was part of KSU coach Bill Snyder’s original staff from 1989-93, serving as the Wildcats’ associate head coach the final three seasons. Quartaro also worked with Minnesota Vikings coach Dennis Green for five years at Northwestern.

Quartaro was a kicker for the University of Iowa and was the school’s second-leading career scorer when he graduated in 1977. He also lettered as a defensive end/kicker as a freshman at Xavier before transferring to Iowa.

With Quartaro, Mangino’s staff is up to five coaches. Earlier this week, the Jayhawks confirmed the hiring of secondary coach Pat Henderson and retaining of former Terry Allen assistants Travis Jones and Clint Bowen. Mangino also is thought to have added former Ohio State graduate assistant Brandon Blaney.
