Tie me kangaroo down: KU 79, UMKC 68

By Chris Cottrell     Dec 8, 2001

No one expected tonight’s game between the Kansas Jayhawks and the UMKC Kangaroos to be a blowout-the hosts were the only ones coming in with a loss. The final score does not reflect how closely fought this game was. Only in the game’s final minute could Coach Roy Williams clear the bench and give the subs playing time.

The opening tip-off immediately went out of bounds. The ‘Roos scored the game’s first points, and over two minutes into it Kansas hadn’t scored-almost looked scary. However, KU put in the next six points and led the rest of the way.

Foul-shooting trouble continued for Kansas, as they only hit two of their first eight shots from the line. They hit 18 of 22 after that to end up 20-30 on the night.

Kansas built up a lead as large as 16 points in the first half, but UMKC always managed to fight back. In the second half the Jayhawks’ lead got as big as 19, but nearly shrank to single-digits several times. But they never got any closer then that. UMKC’s Michael Watson hit a desperation three at the buzzer for the final poins of the game.

Watson led all scoring with 29 points. Jeff Boschee paced Kansas with 19. Kirk Hinrich just missed a triple-double, scoring 15 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and dishing eight assists.

Drew Gooden and Wayne each scored 13 points-with Gooden adding 10 rebounds for another double-double. Nick Collison scored 10.

Kansas outrebounded UMKC 37-29, and notched 19 assists for their 27 baskets on the night.

Next up for the Hawks: a trip to New Jersey to take on the Princeton Tigers Wednesday night.
