KU ensembles to perform patriotic selections

Kansas University’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble and University Band will perform a selection of patriotic music at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Lied Center.

Guest conductor Col. John R. Bourgeois, former director of the U.S. Marine Band, will join KU music professor Tom Stidham in conducting the University Band. The band will perform “To Dance in the Secret Garden” by Robert E. Smith; “Ave Maria,” arranged by William L. Ballenger; “We as a Nation” by local composer Daniel Chisham; “Semper Fidelis” by John Philip Sousa; and an arrangement of “America the Beautiful.”

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble, directed by KU music professor Robert Foster and guest conductors Bourgeois and Grant Okamura of the University of Hawaii, will perform “Festival Overture, Op. 96” by Dmitri Shostakovich; “Konzertstuck, Movement I” by Robert Schumann; “Sweet Land of Liberty” by James Sochinski; “Galop” by Jacques Offenbach; “Marching Along” by Sousa; and “Festival Overture” by Dudley Buck.

Admission is $7 for the general public and $5 for students and senior citizens. Tickets are available at the Lied Center Box Office, 864-ARTS; Murphy Hall Box Office, 864-3982; and the Student Union Activities Box Office, 864-3477.
