Jayhawks clobber Missouri

? Kansas University’s women’s tennis team defeated Missouri, 4-1, in a first-round Big 12 championship match on Thursday at Baylor’s courts.

The Jayhawks (12-11, 4-7) meet Oklahoma State this morning in the quarterfinals.

KU took the doubles point with a pair of victories at the bottom two positions. Senior Monica Sekulov and freshman Emily Haylock beat MU’s Caitlin Thompson and Cassie Drake, 8-2. Drake was a former Kansas high school state champion from Shawnee Mission South.

KU’s Cheryl and Lisa Mallaiah beat Marina Zelenovia and Kristina Olshanskaya, 8-1.

Haylock won for the seventh time in her last eight matches at the No. 5 singles slot, defeating Drake, 6-3, 6-2. Christi Wagenaar defeated Andrea Friedman at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3.

Courtney Steinbock, who was named Big 12 Player of the Week on Tuesday, beat Thompson, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.

MU’s lone win came at No. 1 singles with Jessica Ferguson toppling Sekulov, 6-4.
