Smart pitches KU past Cyclones, 5-1

By J-W Staff Reports     Apr 14, 2001

? Pete Smart did not allow a hit through seven innings and finished with a complete-game three-hitter as Kansas University downed Iowa State, 5-1, in Big 12 baseball on Friday at Cap Timm Stadium.

“Pete was dominant this afternoon,” KU coach Bobby Randall said. “Not bad for a guy who was under the weather from the moment he woke up this morning.”

Jason Appuhn made a diving catch on a sinking liner to center in the first inning, and Casey Spanish made a nice snare of a tough grounder in the second to help preserve the no-hitter.

Smart retired 15 straight Cyclones in the middle innings.

ISU (11-19-1 overall, 4-8 Big 12) touched Smart for three consecutive doubles in the eighth inning, but Smart (7-2) settled down to retire the next six Cyclones.

Smart walked one and struck out five.

Kansas (16-12, 4-15) led 1-0 after one, 3-0 after two and 4-0 after three.

Catcher Brent Del Chiaro had a season-best three hits, including his first home run, and two RBIs, and Ryan Klocksien was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. He homered for the second straight game.

“I was very pleased with our offensive production as well,” Randall said. “We did the little things we needed to do to win with Ryan Klocksien and Brent Del Chiaro providing enough offense to get the job done.”

KU and ISU will play again at 1 p.m. today and 1 p.m. Sunday.
