Kansas State tripped Kansas, 5-2, in women’s college tennis on Sunday at Alvamar.

The loss marked Kansas’ first-ever defeat to KSU. Kansas dropped to 10-8 overall and 4-5 in the Big 12. KSU improved to 10-6, 6-1.

The Wildcats opened by taking two of three doubles matches and winning the doubles point. KU’s Emily Haylock and Christi Wagenaar were the only two Jayhawks to win in singles play.

KU’s Monica Sekulov lost at No. 1 singles to Alena Jeckminkova, 6-4, 6-4. KU’s Cheryl Mallaiah, Courtney Steinbock and Lisa Mallaiah all lost three-set matches at Nos. 2-4 singles respectively. Each of the Jayhawks won the opening set.

“We just need to close out matches,” KU coach Kilmeny Waterman said. “We tend to get less aggressive instead of more when we’re up, and a good team like Kansas State takes advantage of that.”

KU will travel to Tulsa on Saturday.
