College Station, Texas ? Kansas University’s baseball team snapped a 10-game losing streak by downing Texas A&M, 5-2, before a crowd of 4,413 Sunday at Olsen Field.
The win upped the Jayhawks’ record to 15-21 overall and 3-15 in Big 12 play. A&M fell to 24-13, 9-6.
Junior pitcher Doug Lantz (2-3) allowed eight hits, all singles, while striking out eight in the complete-game win.
Kansas jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after sophomore Jason Appuhn and senior Jesse Gremminger scored on a Kevin Wheeler single and error by Aggie third baseman Matt Alexander.
KU busted a 2-2 tie in the seventh. Senior John Nelson connected for his fourth home run to start the inning. Appuhn reached by way of another error charged to A&M’s Alexander, followed by a two-run home run by junior Ryan Klocksien.
Later in the same inning Gremminger lengthened his team-high hitting streak to 13 games after singling, but was doubled up at second base on a ground ball hit by Wheeler. The Jayhawks never looked back as Lantz retired nine of the next 12 Aggie hitters.
KU will meet Creighton at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Omaha, Neb.
