Several members of Kansas University’s women’s basketball, softball and baseball teams will be big brothers and big sisters today.

The 21 Jayhawks, in conjunction with Lawrence’s Big Brothers-Big Sisters program, will accompany approximately 25 youths to the Kansas-Southern Illinois football game.

It’s the first community involvement event of the school year organized by KU’s Student-Athletes Advisory Committee.

“We plan to have four,” said Gary Kempf, KU Director of Student-Athlete Life. “We’ll have another one this year, probably a women’s basketball game, then two in the spring, probably softball and baseball.”

Today’s schedule starts with a bus ride to Memorial Stadium from Parrott Complex at about 4:30 p.m. Next is a pre-game tailgate party with hot dogs, chips and beverages.

“If the weather is bad,” Kempf said, “we’ll have pizza at Parrott, then go to the game.”

They’ll leave the football game at the end of the third quarter and return the youths to their parents or guardians.

Practically every member of the women’s basketball team is scheduled to take part. Acting as big sisters will be Brooke Reves, Kristin Geoffroy, Rodneikka Freeman, Kristen May, KC Hilgenkamp, Katie Hannon, Jaclyn Johnson, Leila Menguc, Sharronpencer, Fernanda Bosi and Dalcon Brown.

Softball players scheduled to participate are Erin Garvey, Melanie Wallach and Dani May. Baseball players on hand will be John Nelson, Alan Orgain, Justin Wilcher, Matt Tribble, Clay Wheeler, Kevin Wheeler and Doug Lantz.
