Overland Park ? Kansas University bounced back from Saturday’s loss to Mississippi by blanking Southwest Missouri State, 2-0, Sunday at the Jayhawk Soccer Classic at Blue Valley Northwest.
The Jayhawks scored in the 86th minute when Colleen Colvin found Meghann Haven behind the Bear defense. Haven put a shot past goalie Jennifer Grocki for her fourth goal of the season.
Grocki was outstanding in goal for SW Missouri. She stopped Johanna Larsson and Colvin on point-blank shots. Larsson later scored KU’s second goal.
KU sophomore goalkeeper Layla Young made five saves to earn her second shutout, with the help of a solid defensive effort led by Pardis Brown and Lindsay Hunting.
Colvin, Haven, Hunting and Brown made the all tournament team.
“Today means a lot to the team because yesterday was very disappointing,” KU coach Mark Francis said of Saturday’s 4-3 setback to tourney champ Ole Miss. “Everybody was pretty devastated so to come back with a win was huge.”
The Jayhawks will open Big 12 Conference play against Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Friday in Norman, Okla.
