Bloomington, Ind. ? Kansas University freshman tennis player Kristen Steinbock captured the title in singles flight No. 2, as the Jayhawks wrapped up the third and final day of play at the Indiana Invitational, held in Bloomington, Ind. No team scores were kept at the six-team invitational.
In Kilmeny Waterman’s first event as KU women’s tennis coach, Steinbock defeated Southern Illinois’ Erika Ochoa in Sunday’s finals, 7-6, 7-5. Fellow freshman Emily Haylock took fourth place in that flight, as she dropped a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7) decision to Southern Illinois’ Tana Trapani in a consolation match.
The Jayhawks also captured four of the top five spots in singles flight No. 1. Indiana’s Lisa Tran knocked off Kansas’ Cheryl Mallaiah in the finals of the flight, winning a tight 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (7) decision. Younger sister Lisa Mallaiah, who lost to her older sibling in the semifinals, defeated teammate Courtney Steinbock for third place, 6-4, 6-1. Monica Sekulov seized fifth place with a win over Western Michigan’s Meaghan Colville, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (8).
Sophomore Kim Lorenz won a consolation match in singles flight No. 3, taking a 7-6, 6-1
victory to place fifth in the flight.
In doubles action, the duo of Sekulov and Haylock seized third place, winning an 8-4 decision over Irina Kharun and Jessica Levin of Indiana. However, the team of Courtney Steinbock and Lisa Mallaiah dropped an 8-5 contest to WMU’s Colville and Melanie Renuyse to take fifth in a consolation match.
Participants at the Indiana Invitational included players from Kansas, Indiana, Miami (Ohio), Western Michigan, Southern Illinois and Ball State.
