? Junior forward Natalie Hoogveld scored a goal and was credited with two assists to lift Kansas University to a 4-1 soccer victory over Creighton on Monday.

Hoogveld opened the scoring in the sixth minute on an assist from junior midfielder Melanie Schroeder. Hoogveld then set up senior forward Lindsey Horner for the eventual game-winning goal 10 minutes before halftime.

Creighton (1-3) cut the KU lead in half minutes after the break when Heather Houska converted a penalty kick, the first the Jayhawks have surrendered this season.

Senior midfielder Meghann Haven, who had missed a penalty kick earlier in the match, boosted KU’s lead to 3-1 with a goal just three minutes after the Bluejays scored on an assist from Hoogveld.

Then, in the 80th minute, Schroeder found the back of the net on a direct free kick.

Kansas snapped a two-game losing streak and evened its record at 2-2.

“Defensively, we are a lot happier with how we played as a team today,” KU coach Mark Francis said.

Creighton launched 16 shots at the KU net, but goalkeeper Layla Young was forced to make just three saves. Kansas took 10 shots, and Creighton goalie Maggie Phelan was credited with five saves.

Kansas will continue its long season-opening road swing in the Cal-Irvine Tournament this weekend. KU will meet Cal-Irvine on Friday and Cal State Fullerton on Sunday.
