? Kansas University’s volleyball team went 2-0 on Friday at the season-opening Purdue Mortar Board Premier.

The Jayhawks beat Western Michigan two games to one and swept Eastern Kentucky 3-0.

KU needed just 53 minutes to dump Eastern Kentucky 15-3, 15-3, 15-3. Earlier, the Jayhawks gained a hard-earned win over Western Michigan 15-7, 6-15, 15-13, 16-14.

“Our serving was much better this match compared to the first time out,” KU coach Ray Bechard said of the nightcap. “We had half as many serving errors and dug the ball a lot better than we did against Western Michigan.”

With the exception of Sara Kidd, who is nursing an ankle injury, every Jayhawk played at least one game in the match.

“It’s nice to have the opportunity to play every player especially this early in the season,” Bechard said. “And, as you can see by the scores, we didn’t drop off a whole lot while playing some of the kids off the bench.”

Senior outside hitters Nancy Bell and Amy Myatt had 10 kills against Eastern Kentucky.

Myatt recorded a game-high 16 kills in the opener. Bell had 13 kills, while sophomore Kylie Thomas and freshman Sarah Rome had 10 kills each.

The Jayhawks will conclude the tournament by facing host Purdue at 7 tonight.
