Freshman guard Mario Kinsey will be out for two to four weeks after undergoing leg surgery, Kansas coach Roy Williams announced Wednesday.
He said the surgery on Kinsey’s lower right leg was performed Tuesday night by Dr. Ken Wertzberger. The coach said it was done to correct anterior compartment syndrome, described as resulting from too much exercise and stress.
Kinsey will be on crutches while recovering. The 6-foot-2 guard from Waco, Texas, came to Kansas on a football scholarship, practicing with the team as a quarterback and wide receiver before becoming a football redshirt last week and joining the basketball team.
In the opening intrasquad scrimmage last weekend he had an assist, a block and two steals.
“He was doing very well in practice and he has shown that he can help this team,” said Williams. “We will be very conservative with him when he gets back. Again, we’re just very disappointed for Mario, and very disappointed for the team.”
