Boschee, Kansas University’s 6-foot-1 guard, chided Middle Tennessee State’s D’Marius Wilkes during KU’s breezy 92-66 win in Allen Fieldhouse.

Wilkes is listed at 5-foot-9 on the program, but Boschee didn’t think so.

“I told him there ain’t no way you’re 5-9,” Boschee said, smiling.

Boschee was speaking in jest, but there wasn’t anything funny about his numbers. He scored a season- and game-high 19 points that included a trio of three-point goals.

Then again, Boschee did most of the damage against the Raiders’ Wilkes who may have been 5-9 if he stood on a stool.

“He told me, ‘Yeah, I wish I was 5-9,'” Boschee said.

Anyway, Boschee has to become accustomed to the size differential.

“I’m not used to looking down at the guy guarding me,” Boschee said. “But he did a great job early of making us work hard over the whole court. It can be tougher to play against a guy that size because of how they can attack.”

Boschee has always been a streak shooter, so even when he’s missing he keeps firing and, he said, “I think my shot selection has been pretty good.”

After missing all four of his three-point attempts in the first half, Boschee nailed his first two early in the second stanza to extend KU’s lead to 57-30. After a pair of Nick Collison free throws, Boschee drilled another trey.

“I’ve got all the confidence in the world that it’s going to go in every time,” Boschee said. “A shooter has to think that way.”

Boschee came into Monday’s game shooting 38.9 percent (seven of 18) from beyond the arc. He was supposed to be mostly a shooting guard this year, but an injury to freshman Mario Kinsey has required Boschee to split more time at the point with Kirk Hinrich.

“We’re not too deep at that position,” Boschee said. “We’re going to have to all step up and fill in until he gets healthy.”

Boschee spent his first two Kansas seasons primarily at the point, but the improvement of Hinrich has enabled Boschee to think shooting first and passing second.

More time at the No. 2 spot also shows in his turnover totals. He had only six going into Monday’s game, although he had a couple of more against the Blue Raiders and took the blame for some of Kansas’ early giveaway problems.

After KU committed its ninth turnover with 4:51 remaining until halftime, coach Roy Williams called time and administered a tongue-lashing.

“That’s the hardest he’s been on us so far,” Boschee said.

Boschee believes KU’s early games against undermanned foes have prevented him from getting into a rhythm because of the strategy on pounding the ball inside.

“That’s been one of our big points of emphasis,” Boschee said. “We want to get the ball to our big guys for easy buckets, and we’ve been able to do that so far this season.”

Still, Boschee helped in that regard, too, with six assists.
