Jayhawks rebound with win over UL-Monroe

? Kansas University’s women’s basketball team bounced back from Saturday’s loss to host Alabama-Birmingham with a 73-60 victory over Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday in the consolation game of the Blazer Classic.

Jaclyn Johnson, who fouled out early with seven points in Saturday’s 67-62 loss to UAB, was taken out of the starting lineup Sunday.

She responded with a career-high 25 points and grabbed nine rebounds in 26 minutes. The senior forward sank eight of 17 field-goal attempts, nine of 11 free-throw attempts and was named to the all-tournament team.

Guard Selena Scott, who scored three points in Saturday’s loss, also was moved to the bench Sunday and also set a career high with 13 points.

The junior also contributed a career-high five assists and had three steals. She sank six of seven free-throw attempts.

The Jayhawks shot 19 of 25 from the foul line, compared to 15 of 21 for Louisiana-Monroe.

It was the second game in a row that KU’s bench outscored the Jayhawks’ starters. Starting forward Brooke Reves had 14 points and eight rebounds, helping the Jayhawks to a 40-34 advantage on the boards. Guard Jennifer Jackson added eight points and seven rebounds.

Kansas (3-1) led 33-30 at halftime and held a 50-45 lead with 11:26 remaining. The Jayhawks then went on a 14-6 run, widening the gap to 64-51 with 6:26 to play. Kansas maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Center Terri Butler, an all-tournament selection, and guard Mykayla Alewine led Louisiana-Monroe with 15 points each.

Alewine sank three of seven three-point attempts.

Danielle Butler and Miranda Hasley added eight points each.

UAB defeated Tennessee-Martin, 85-62, in the tournament’s championship game. MVP Deanna Jackson had 29 points and 12 rebounds for the Blazers.

Notes: Junior college transfer Fernanda Bosi made her first start for KU, replacing Johnson, and scored eight points. … Junior center Nikki White, who injured her nose in Saturday’s shootaround, did not play. … Jackson played only 20 minutes. She collided with a UL-Monroe player in the second half and had swelling over her left eye. … KU leads the series with UL-Monroe 3-1. … Coach Marian Washington’s record is 526-288. … KU plays host to Illinois Tuesday night at Allen Fieldhouse.
