Eric Chenowith hoped to tie a career high with 20 rebounds on Saturday night.
He “settled” for 17 boards to go with 19 points in Kansas’ 99-56 victory over Washburn at Allen Fieldhouse.
Washburn | 25 | 31 | 56 |
Kansas | 48 | 51 | 99 |
Attendance: 16,300.
“Coach Williams challenged me to get 20 rebounds,” Chenowith said of coach Roy Williams. “What happened is, this week at practice I got a rebound from Bryant (Nash). I kind of snarled at him, joking around. Coach didn’t like that much.
“He said, ‘Why don’t you go out and get 20 rebounds and you can look all tough and stuff.”‘
Chenowith, KU’s senior center, said he was more proud of his 17 boards than his 19 points.
“No question the rebounds are more important,” he said. “I want to lead the team in rebounds. I really want to be a presence on the boards and presence defensively this year.”
Williams was upset with himself for not removing Nick Collison from the game after Collison picked up his fourth foul with 15:17 left. Collison fouled out at 14:35, playing just 10 minutes total one minute the second half.
“I’m a little mad at myself. Nick got his fourth foul. I told him to be smart. Then I said, ‘Let’s not make him do that.’ So I had Drew (Gooden) at the table to take him out,” Williams said. “I even asked coach (Joe) Holladay how many fouls Kirk Hinrich had. I was going to have Kirk make an intentional foul.
“He (Collison) got beat and made his fifth foul. It was dumb coaching.”
Collison, who came off the bench for the first time since the opener against UCLA, finished with a career-low two points.
Drew Gooden’s father, stepmother, brother and sister are in town, visiting from California. They’ll remain for Monday’s game against Middle Tennessee State and Thursday’s against Illinois State.
“Drew’s family is here. I think he wanted to do more. He was a little anxious,” Williams said of the sophomore forward who hit four of eight free throws and four of nine shots for 12 points with six boards and five turnovers.
Luke Axtell, who missed KU’s first four games with a left ankle sprain, “tweaked” the ankle late, Williams said. He’ll ice the ankle and not practice full-go today in preparation for Monday’s game against Middle Tennessee State.
Jeff Boschee tied a career high with nine assists. … Bret Ballard (two threes) and Todd Kappelmann (three points) each scored the first points of their KU careers. …
Former Kansas guard Marlon London is back in town this weekend visiting his ex-teammates and coaches.
He attended Saturday’s game.
“When I was at will-call (to pick up tickets), people were waving to me and saying nice things,” said London, who transferred to DePaul last spring after playing two years at KU.
“They say they miss me and wish me well. It’s a weird feeling. The fans know I don’t go here anymore. But I love ’em still and they love me. The feeling is mutual.”
The refs’ battery packs did not stop the clock on three occasions the first half, so the refs removed the packs. The battery packs in theory stop the clock after each whistle.
