KU women turn back Arkansas State

? Jaclyn Johnson had 13 points, four blocked shots and four steals offset by nine turnovers as Kansas’ women’s basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak to Arkansas State with a 63-51 victory over the Indians on Tuesday night at ASU’s Convocation Center.

Kansas played just eight players, and all eight scored.

Brooke Reves and reserve Selena Scott each had 10 points for the Jayhawks (2-0).

Kansas held Arkansas State (1-2) to 29.1-percent shooting while hitting 46.9 percent of its shots.

KU hit 45.8 percent of its field goals to ASU’s 29.6 percent in taking a 27-26 halftime lead.

Kansas took the lead for good on a layup by Kristin Geoffroy with 15:31 left in the second half. That layup sparked a 7-0 Kansas run. Scott hit a free throw and Nikki White had two layups in that run.

The Jayhawks twice built to a nine-point lead, but the Indians pulled within a point three times in the final six minutes, the last at 52-51 with 3:37 left. Kansas ran off the final 11 points.

Scott hit four free throws, KC Hilgenkamp hit a three-pointer and two free throws and Johnson had a layup in the game-ending run.

Hilgenkamp finished with nine points.

Kansas outrebounded ASU, 39-37. Reves led Kansas with eight rebounds.

The Jayhawks won despite having 30 turnovers. Arkansas State turned it over 28 times

Jolie McKeirnan led ASU with 16 points, while Keeshia Evans added 13 and Natalie Goodall had 10.

Kansas will face Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday in the first round of the UAB Classic in Birmingham, Ala. Tipoff is 6 p.m.
